In today's video, I'm going to be talking about the lonely path to success following our dreams. A little bit of advice that I heard from Will Smith about who we get our advice from and the fact that other people won't be as invested as we are in our own dreams. I'll see you in a minute.
The Importance Of Self Belief
Self-belief in our dreams, self-belief in our ability to pursue our dreams is one of the most fragile things in the world. So easily crushed, so easily extinguished. We need to guard our self-belief and guard our dreams against cynicism, against the naysayers, against the people who tell you, “Oh, stay safe.” I remember my mum used to say, “Oh, don't get your hopes up.” Of all the people in the world, she should have supported me the most, but she didn't want me to be hurt by the disappointment.
Our Mum's Greatest Influence
Imagine if she'd use that while she was teaching me to walk. After the first attempt and I'd fallen and was lying in the dirt crying, why didn't she say, “Oh, just stay there. You'll be all right. Don't risk hurting yourself again.” But no, she knew that I was destined to walk. She knew that that was achievable. She knew that that was going to happen. So every time I stumbled, she'd just picked me up, give me a dust down, tap me on the bum and say, “Go on, try it again. Keep trying, keep trying,” and I learned to walk.
Her Love Was My Protection
But virtually from that moment on, my mom was trying to protect me from myself, trying to protect me from going wrong. Don't get your hopes up, dear. Just be happy with what you've got. Oh, the love in those sentences was paramount, but it was crippling, absolutely crippling. Maintaining our own self-belief against all the odds can be really difficult and we really want those around us, those we respect, or those that we are inspired by, to support us.
But they so rarely will.
No One Wants us To Do Better THAN THEM
One of the reasons is they would rather… If they can't see themselves achieving something, there is no way they either want you to prove that it's achievable because that makes them look bad and they certainly don't want you to achieve in front of them because they would resent that. Preserving our self-belief, I think it was Steve Jobs who said it's an obsession. Nobody is going to give you permission to go after your dreams. If you wait until somebody says, “Yeah, I think you can do that,” you will never start.
chase Your Dream
If you've got a dream to achieve what to other people seems impossible, if you've got a dream to get a business idea off the ground, don't wait for somebody to say, “Yeah, I think that's a good idea.” Nobody will, or very few people will. Stuck In a Truck and the business around Stuck In a Truck was born out of my need to provide an ongoing income for my family, whether I was here or not, a residual ongoing income, a royalty income.
I Will Support You
It's a dream that many people say, “Oh yeah, that'd be nice.” But how many people are willing to do what it takes to achieve it? How many people quit at the first hurdle? How many people give up on themselves and take the easy route? I'll support you all the way in any way that I can. I will never tell you what you can't do. If you need somebody on the side, I won't tell you what to do, when to do it or how to do it, I'll be the biggest cheerleader you've ever seen. You could have a wishful.
Protect Your Dream, Protect Your Self Belief
Protect your self-belief. Become obsessive about achieving your goals and become relentless in the pursuit of them. It's a lonely path that you're choosing and you may fail. But if you never try, you have failed. I'd rather try and fall over, try and fall over than just quit on myself. I believe you would too. Nice to speak to you. Thanks for watching.
